Sterilization Leadership: Leading with Protocol, Not Panic

Description:

A failed sterilizer cycle can trigger panic, but your response shouldn't. Whether it’s a failed BI test, error code, or a load that’s been compromised, how you respond in those critical moments can determine the difference between a minor disruption and a major compliance breach. The real question is: Are you prepared to respond in a way that’s defensible, documented, and safe for client care?

This practical and engaging course walks you through exactly what to do when your sterilizer fails, before panic takes over! From interpreting error messages and handling failed indicators to managing quarantined instruments and preparing for potential recalls, you’ll leave this session with the confidence to take immediate, correct action.

You’ll also examine real-world cases, explore root causes of sterilizer issues, and develop a protocol that ensures your entire team knows how to act fast, communicate clearly, and document thoroughly. This course will assist you in building internal protocols that turn chaos into clarity.  Whether you’re the sterilization lead or simply next to the machine when the cycle fails, this session will transform panic into protocol.

Rethinking our approach to erosive toothwear
Description:

There is evidence that the presence of enamel erosion is steadily growing, as a result, erosive tooth wear is becoming increasingly significant in the management of the long-term health of the dentition. What is most important is erosive tooth wear factors are identified early and adequate preventative measure are considered when determining an appropriate course of action.

This presentation will cover:

  1. Background on erosion

  2. Challenges identifying enamel erosion early

  3. Erosion contributing factors

  4. Who is at risk

  5. Prevention – what is the role of ingredients in toothpaste for erosion

Learning Objectives:

  1. Discuss challenges of identifying early tooth surface loss

  2. Evaluate the biological, chemical, and behavioural factors contributing to enamel erosion.

  3. Determine a preventative course of action.

Overall Objective:

  • There are challenges identifying early surface tooth loss visually, an alternative would be to assess the individual’s overall risk of developing enamel erosion.

  • Modifying behaviours makes sense if the patient is compliant. Start with a behaviour that doesn't take a lot of work such as food pairings or modifying their toothpaste.
