Zirconia: Clinical Applications and Challenges

Dr. Mahmood Abu Ruja, DDS, MSc, PhD, MSc(Prostho), FRCDC

Description:

All-ceramic restorations have been used in recent years for their superior gingival response and esthetic quality. Yttria-tetragonal zirconia polycrystalline (Y-TZP) is a non-silicate ceramic of great interest in the field of prosthetic and implant dentistry due to its excellent mechanical properties. In spite of the high mechanical properties, Y-TZP has poor bond strength to the underlying substrate even when resin-based cements are used due to the lack of a glassy matrix and the absence of silica. Different surface treatment methods have been proposed to improve the bond strength to resin cement, including chemical and/or mechanical surface treatments, but no benchmark has been established to date.

In this lecture, we will:

  • Provide an overview and insight into newer materials

  • Understand the different structures and properties of Y-TZP

  • What are the indications for different materials

  • Learn how to handle and bond Zirconia.

Dr. Mahmood Abu Ruja is a clinician-scientist in the field of Prosthodontics, with over 10 years of experience as a clinician and a lecturer in Prosthodontics. He received his dental degree from The University of Jordan in 2006. He completed his MSc in Prosthodontics and Ph.D. in Dental materials at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto. Dr. Abu Ruja's research explored topics related to dental materials, Zirconia bonding and surface treatment, and complications of dental implants. He received many national and international awards for his research. Dr. Abu Ruja is currently an instructor in Prosthodontics at the University of Toronto and maintains a private practice limited to Prosthodontics. He enjoys spending his free time with family and friends.

The 1- Wing Maryland bridge. SYNOPSIS MARYLAND BRIDGE

Dr. Mario Rotella

Description:

Missing teeth in the anterior aesthetic region represent an urgent need for dental
intervention and often require an early treatment strategy that restores both the
aesthetic and functional aspects of the dentition. Cantilever resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses (RBFDPs) are considered a minimally invasive treatment approach to the replacement of single missing anterior teeth and provide excellent clinical outcomes, high survival rates and great patient satisfaction.

The Maryland bonded bridge traditionally featured metal wings and porcelain pontics. Today, zirconia is the material of choice due to the better esthetic result. This lecture is intended to provide additional knowledge and information on the “Maryland” bridge, taking in consideration:

  • case selection

  • material choice

  • preparation design and bridge design

Mario Rotella is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada (F.R.C.D. (C), board certified specialist in Prosthodontics. Dr. Rotella received his Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Siena (Italy), where he graduated with summa cum laude. He completed a 2-year Advance Education in General Dentistry program at the Eastman Institute for Oral Health, University of Rochester, Rochester, NY. At the same institution, he completed a 3-year Prosthodontic program and a 1-year Implant surgical fellowship. Dr. Rotella focuses his practice concentrating on the treatment of complex cases of aesthetic and functional rehabilitation on natural dentition and implants, with emphasis on veneers, crowns, bridges and dentures. Dr. Rotella’s practice encompasses the traditional prosthetic procedures and the most innovative ones, with particular focus on the minimally invasive prosthetic procedures for the application of veneers, partial restorations, and all-ceramics crowns and bridges. Dr. Rotella has presented his work in several dental meetings and he has, also, published several articles in peer-reviewed journals, such as the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry.

Create Optimal Clinical Results & Patient Experience Through Diagnosis and Management of Gingival Inflammation

Pamela Bedour, RDH

Description:

Gingival inflammation is the first step on the way to periodontal disease through its initial regulation of changes in the oral bacteria that lead to breakdown of the tissues that support the teeth. In its earliest stages the initiation of gingival inflammation is painless and rarely noticed by the patient. Eliminating oral inflammation is the key objective in the dental recall program. But to do this effectively, dental professionals need to be able to measure oral inflammation levels associated with periodontal diseases objectively. This lecture will discuss a protocol combining 4 pillars for periodontal disease management:

• Diagnostic

• Management of Risk Factors

• Disruption of Biofilm

• Host-Modulation Therapy

Pamela’s expansive and rewarding dental hygiene career has included positions in general practice and a variety of specialties, including periodontal, prosthodontic and orthodontic offices. She was a clinical instructor for both Fanshawe College and Schulich Dentistry at Western University for many years. Pamela obtained her BSc in Oral Health Promotion through O’Hehir University in 2021. She has recently transferred with Oral Science from Ottawa to become the Dental Hygiene Preventive Care Partner for the London and Lake Erie territory.

Digital Dentistry in Contemporary Prosthodontics:

Is it Practical?

Dr. Effie Habsha

Description:

Digital technology has had a dramatic impact on all disciplines of dentistry, particularly in the fields of Prosthodontics and Surgery. The evolution of digital technologies has provided dental professionals with the possibility of following a completely digital workflow beginning from diagnostic treatment planning to prosthesis fabrication. Clinical data acquisition using  intra oral scanners has bridged the digital gap between the clinical practice and the dental laboratory.  While these latest digital tools offer new and different workflows compared to conventional techniques, it is imperative that clinical efficiency and restoration accuracy not be compromised.

This presentation will provide a practical and pragmatic overview of the digital tools and technologies used in a modern prosthodontic practice. A comprehensive overview of digital technology used in diagnosis, treatment planning, surgical treatment planning, guided implant surgery and prosthodontics will be covered. The use of intra oral scanners and the workflow required for simple reconstructions to comprehensive full arch rehabilitations in both conventional and implant based applications will be presented.  Some of the challenges, limitations and inefficiencies encountered utilizing new technologies will be described.

Course Objectives:

  • Demonstrate the utilization of digital technology in Implant Surgery and Prosthodontics

  • Demonstrate the use of intra oral scanners with conventional crown and bridgework and implant dentistry

  • Review the accuracy, benefits and limitations of intra-oral scanners

  • Provide an overview of the digital workflow required in comprehensive fixed reconstructions
